Football The Football Thread - Season 2017/18

  1. THe football season is upon us once again with leagues all around Europe up and running over the coming weeks. It has been a summer of madness so far with transfer fees rocketing and players moving between clubs.

    Let the games begin....
  2. Stoke and Newcastle must be among the favourites for relegation from the Premier League. Neither club has any kind of proper squad with a week to go.

Once Barcelona get over the shock of losing Neymar, I'd expect La Liga to be another 3 horse race between Real, Barcelona and Atletico. Real must be favourites to retain the crown as Barca come to terms with losing a star player and also adapting to a new coach.

Did expect much more competitive leagues in both Germany and Italy this year. The Milan clubs have been spending a lot of money and I expect them to be fighting for Champions League place come the end of the season.

Celtic won at a canter yesterday against Hearts in the opening Scottish Premier League game and I'd expect them to win the league with ease again (although maybe not unbeaten this season).
  3. Newcastle are crying out for a striker and defensive cover.

It's pretty much the same team as last year with a few upgrades here and there.

Lejune looks very tidy and will likely slot right in.

Shelvey looks incredibly fit at this stage already but injuries to himself and Gayle and they'll be in for a tough season.

Wouldn't trust Mitrovic to come up with the goods.

Can't judge a whole lot from pre season but they have a squad of players that seem happy to be at the club and will give it all for the shirt and this is probably what they need right now given the amount of players that constantly threw in the towel previously.

If you believe the tabloids. Benitez isn't happy with the lack of transfer funds or activity.
  4. Arsenal 4 Leicester 3

Great game to start the season. Great entertainment and atmosphere.
Shite defending will cost Arsenal if Wenger doesn't invest in a good, no nonsense CB. I'm surprised they haven't gone for Van Dijk.
  5. Dreadful last 15 minutes from Leicester. Marking for Ramsey and Giroud's goals were as bad as the ones that Arsenal conceded. Two teams that will have problems in centre of defence and set pieces I think.
  6. I think all the "top" teams have forgotten how to defend. Arsenal, Liverpool and Chelsea all concede 3 goals on the opening week on the season.
  7. Shocker for Chelsea. Two players sent off, 3 goals conceded and a home defeat on the opening day of the season.

Maybe Chelsea should give Southampton £60m for Van Dijk. Cahill is going to cost them loads more points this season, bang average player.

    Morata looked top class though.

  8. Brighton 0 Man City 2

Nice victory for Man City, can't really judge too much until they play better opposition - both Everton and Liverpool are on the schedule in the coming weeks - but you can only beat what is put in front of you and they did a good job today. Kyle Walker looked very comfortable. It looks like he and Danilo will be the wingbacks with a back 3 and Fernandinho still in front of them.
  9. I could be wrong of course and Barcelona could come storming back but it feels a bit like they are heading into an "in-between" generation.

No real stars other than the over 30 club who can only last so long and not much coming through. If this transfer window is a bust for them I think they'll struggle a bit.

Obviously it's all relative they'll still be a Top 3 side in Spain but that's not enough for the faithful.
  10. Suarez/Neymar aside it's hard to say their last signing that was an unqualified success

Back ten years ago it looked like English clubs were taking over, it all goes on cycles in football
