New details have been revealed for Microsoft's upcoming Gears of War game.

Black Tusk have discussed plans for the Xbox, which looks set to be an Xbox One exclusive.

An Xbox 360 version of the so far unnamed project is not in development.

Black Tusk's Jack Felling revealed the news on Twitter while discussing Gears of War 4 with fans.

Hey jack the new gears of war will be for xbox 360?

Felling replied: "No sorry, it won't be available on the 360 but it will be available for the Xbox One!

"Trying to post some behind the scenes stuff since there's not much news right now."

Microsoft-owned Black Tusk Studios started working on a new entry in the series after the Gears franchise was bought from Epic Game in 2014.

Gears of War as a franchise has sold over 22 million copies and includes: Gears of War, Gears of War 2, Gears of War 3 and Gears of War: Judgment.

A PC version has yet to be announced, although hasn't been ruled out like Xbox 360.

A Gears of War: Marcus Fenix Collection was recently ruled out by Studio Manager Rod Ferguson for the Xbox One.

"I love the passion, but there’s no Marcus Fenix Collection," he wrote.

Ferguson did have some good news for fans though, teasing that there could be multiple Gears projects in the works.

"We ARE working on other exciting Gears projects. I'll see you at E3!" He added.

The tweet could mean several things and a collection could prove very popular with fans if announced as a complete games bundle at E3 this year.

  2. A new Gears game will be good, loved the first one especially.

Microsoft today revealed a brand-new Gears of War, Gears of War 4, that is coming to Xbox One during holiday 2016.

The game was shown off using the first-ever gameplay footage, which feature two seemingly brand-new characters. A number of elements from previous Gears appear to be returning, including gun-mounted chainsaws and the style of sprinting seeing in previous games.

The demo moved from an outdoor environment where a storm was hitting to an indoor area with very limited lighting. The two characters--one a woman, and one a man whose perspective the demo was shown from--then began fighting a variety of monsters that don't appear to be resemble those seen in past games. In the process, we get to see the Gnasher Shotgun, Lancer, and the chainsaw all used.

While the game undoubtedly looked much better than any past Gears title, there didn't appear to be much new on display; the core gameplay seems largely unchanged, at least based on what we saw this morning. While it's somewhat disappointing that any new elements Gears 4 offers weren't featured in the video, we are still roughly a year and a half away from its launch.

  4. According to Game Informer, the main protagonist in the upcoming Gears of War 4 will have a name familiar to fans of the franchise, the latest cover reveal for Game Informer , this character is none other than Marcus Fenix's son, JD Fenix.

Set 25 years after Gears of War 3, JD apparently ran away from home to join the COG militia and goes AWOL after a “classified incident” which will be revealed through gameplay.

Two other playable characters were also revealed to the magazine by the game's developer The Coalition: Kait Diaz and Delmont “Del” Walker.

    JD Fenix

JD Fenix is the primary protagonist in Gears of War 4, and the son of legendary war hero Marcus Fenix. JD is an idealist who ran away from home at a young age to join the the COG militia only to go AWOL after a classified incident that players will learn more about during the game.

Played by: Liam McIntyre who is best known for his work as the male lead in the Starz series Spartacus. He also recently played the Weather Wizard on the The CW show The Flash.

McIntyre on JD: "It's kind of terrifying, because I get to be the lead in a new era of Gears, which is unbelievable, amazing, and exciting. I'm the legacy, because my dad is Marcus Fenix. JD's a soldier and a bit of a freedom fighter, and in his heart he's a bit of a renegade. He's different from Marcus, but he's still that heroic archetype.

    Kait Diaz

Kait Diaz was born and raised outside of the walled city-states protecting most of humanity. Her parents were leaders of this group of Outsiders, but her father died tragically years ago. Kait isn't familiar with how the COG works, but she is a capable survivalist who forms a quick friendship with JD.

Played by: Laura Bailey, who is an accomplished voice actor, with roles as Kid Trunks in Dragon Ball Z, Spartan Olympia Vale in Halo 5: Guardians, and Jaina Proudmoore in World of Warcraft, among others.

Bailey on Kait: "What's interesting about her is that she grew up as an Outsider, so she's been away from this military environment that the boys grew up in. It's fun to do her dialogue because she approaches it from a different place. She has a less technical approach to everything she does because she's never experienced anything like this. She's a great entry point into this world, because she doesn't know everything about it either."

    Delmont "Del" Walker

Delmont "Del" Walker is another ex-COG soldier. Del was an orphan who became friends with JD at boarding school. When JD ran off to join the Army, Del followed his lead. Unfortunately, Del was also involved with the classified incident that sent both of them running out into the wilds of Sera, seeking refuge among the Outsiders. Still, Del remains deeply loyal to JD.

Played by: Eugene Byrd, who recently played Marcus "Boomer" Boone in last year's shooter Battlefield Hardline. He also appears as a recurring cast member on television shows like Arrow and Bones.

Byrd on Del: "Del is cool. I had to play up the nuance because the friendship between him and JD meant a lot, so getting to know [Liam McIntyre] and actually becoming friends with him helped us play together. I think Del wasn't a clean slate, so I had to give him a bit of a backstory, but then we were able to evolve it. We're actually building it while we're doing it."

The article goes on to state the studio is taking the fourth outing back to its “darker, horror-themed roots.”

Gears of War 4 will host a multiplayer beta this spring and is set for a full release this fall on Xbox One. It will feature two player couch co-op and a new close-cover melee system.

Gears Of War 4 marks an ambitious attempt by both Microsoft and developer The Coalition to kickstart the series once again, taking it in a new direction with a fresh cast of characters while simultaneously getting back to the more horror-focused elements of the first Gears of War game.

Windflares are devastating storms that rage across the surface of Sera during Gears 4's campaign. Not only can they fry combatants into crispy bacon but their fierce winds fling objects across the environment, turning anyone unlucky enough to be in their path into bloody smears.

Juvies are one of the Swarm's more deceptive units. On their own, these little buggers aren't too hard to handle, though their speedy movements and slimeiness make them pretty creepy. However, as a group, they can take you down easily if you let them get close enough to gang up on you.

If you're tired of the classic Lancer chainsaw finishing move, Gears Of War 4 is bringing a host of new, gory executions courtesy of a handy combat knife. The execution animation changes depending on where your character is standing in relation to a dazed enemy, but all of them are vicious and reminiscent of the brutal stealth executions in Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor...just with a lot more brain matter.

One of The Coalition's primary goals for Gears Of War 4 is to make cover combat exciting again. The vault kick, a feature new to the series, is designed to let players slide over a piece of cover and kick an enemy in the face. This move stuns the enemy, leaving them open for an execution if the player is fast enough.

  6. This looks like it is going to be a fantastic addition to the Gears of War franchise. Really looking forward to this, probably more than any other upcoming game

  7. The Gears of War 4 multiplayer beta will begin on Xbox One starting April 18, Microsoft has announced.

If you are keen to play, then you'll need to play Gears of War Ultimate Edition on Xbox One or PC by April 11. Which is an extension, as the previous cut off date was March 1.

After the "early access" period ends on April 24, all Xbox Live Gold members can play through May 1, so even if you don't play from April 18, you will at least get the chance six days later.

To clarify. To qualify for early access to the Gears of War 4 beta, you need to log in to Xbox Live and play the Ultimate Edition on Xbox One or Windows 10 by 11 PM PST on April 11.

  8. Appearing on the latest Game Informer Show, Gears of War 4 boss Rod Fergusson answered lots of questions about the upcoming Xbox One shooter. Two noteworthy responses related to the upcoming beta and split-screen play.

On the subject of Gears of War 4's upcoming beta, Fergusson stressed that, similar to the Halo 5: Guardians beta, it is very much a "technical" beta, not anywhere near ready for launch.

"What you're going to play is basically an alpha build of our multiplayer," he said. "That means there's going to be issues, but it's an actual beta. It's not a fake demo; it's not a highly polished thing in the sense that it's set up as a marketing demo. It's actually, 'Hey, we have brand new technology on our servers and we have brand new features on our client and we want that to be tested at scale and we want your help.'"

Some betas can be more like marketing vessels, Fergusson said, adding that this won't be the case with Gears of War 4's beta. "Honest to god, it's a technical beta," he said.

Fergusson went on to say that developer The Coalition hopes to gather feedback from fans about Gears of War 4's multiplayer so it can make changes to the final product.

Also during the hour-long podcast, Fergusson confirmed that Gears of War 4 will offer split-screen co-op. "Any way you can play Gears of War you can play split-screen," he explained.

For split-screen, however, frame rate drops down to 30fps due in part to the complexity of what's going on. As previously confirmed, Gears of War 4's campaign runs at 1080p/30fps, while multiplayer is shooting for 60fps, though a resolution hasn't been confirmed.

While some games are dropping split-screen, including Microsoft's own Halo 5: Guardians, Gears of War 4 was always going to have it. "We can never get rid of that," Fergusson explained.

The Game Informer Show podcast is stuffed full of other interesting details about the development and vision for Gears of War 4.

In other news, Gears of War 4's story, which follows Marcus Fenix's son and two other new characters, takes place over the span of 24 hours. Additionally, it's also been confirmed that Gears of War 4's co-op is limited to two players locally and online, not four as was the case with Gears of War 3.

A PC version of Gears of War 4 is also a possibility.

The Gears of War 4 multiplayer beta begins on Xbox One starting April 18. To get in on that date, you need to play Gears of War Ultimate Edition on Xbox One or PC by April 11. Previously, you needed to have played by March 1, but Microsoft announced an extension back in March.

The first wave of tokens for the beta will begin to be dispersed on April 18, though Microsoft didn't say who will get codes first or how long it may take for all codes to go out. After the "early access" period ends on April 24, all Xbox Live Gold members can play through May 1.

  9. Gears of War 4 will be released globally in October, Microsoft has announced.

A multiplayer beta for the game kicks off later this month on April 18 , and those who played Gears of War: Ultimate Edition on Xbox One or Windows 10 will be able to join the beta on Xbox One.

The beta will expand to all Xbox Live Gold members on April 25.

In development at The Coalition, the game will support split-screen in all modes.

Gears of War 4 releases October 11 on Xbox One.
